Synopsis:
My paper consists of two parts. In the first I sketch the trajectory of Aristophanes's adventure on the modern Greek stage during the 20th century: the initial attempts to solve the apparently intractable problems caused by the dependence of his satire on contemporary socio-political reality, on the one hand, and the proverbial bawdiness of his language, on the other; the emergence of two different trends in approaching his revival, the "archaistic" which, though espoused by directors of stature, completely failed to respond to the receptivity of modern audiences, unfamiliar with obsolete or long dead modes of expression, and a "modernistic" one drawing on the conventions of modern theatre and popular entertainment to synthesise an interpretation and praxis in tune with today's world. In the second, and shorter, section I summarise my first and only attempt at directing one of his comedies and refer to the artistic and technical problems I had to face in relation to my own approach.

マルティン・チエシュコ (Martin Ciesko)

1973年スロヴァキア生れ。
1997年コメニウス大学（ブラティスラヴァ）西洋古典学修士課程修了、1999年同大学日本語学科修士課程修了。
2000年オックスフォード大学西洋古典学博士課程修了。
現在京都大学大学院博士課程（西洋古典学）。

Theophanes Joh. Kakridis

born in Athens (1933), studied Classical Philology at the Universities of Thessalonike (ph.d. 1960), Mainz and Tuebingen, where he served as Lecturer in Modern and Ancient Greek language (1959-1964). In 1964 he was elected Professor of Classical Philology in the newly founded University of Jannina (Epirus), where he served until his retirement (2000). He also acted as President of the State Scholarship Foundation and as Vice President of the Pedagogic Institute of the Ministry of Education. Besides his academic career, Th. K. has been active as a columnist and as President in the Center of Odyssean Studies of Ithaka.

Nikos C. Hourmouziades

was born in Thessaoniki. After his graduation (1952) from the Classics Department of the University of Thessaloniki, he pursued his studies (1961-3), on post-graduate level, at the University College of London University, where he obtained his Ph.D, and later (1966-7) at the Center for Hellenic Studies (Washington D.C., U.S.A.). As university professor, he taught at: University of Thessaloniki (1971-88), University of Crete (1978-9), University of Athens (1990-2), University of Thessaloniki (1993-2000). His deep love for the theatre has been also manifested in his involvement with various relative activities.

茂山忠三郎

1928年生れ。1932年「業平餅」子方「靭猿」小猿で初舞台。1965年四世茂山忠三郎を襲名。1979年「茂山忠三郎・狂言の会」発足。1992年「萩大名」「清水」で大阪文化賞本賞受賞。1994年京都府文化賞功労賞受賞。2001年「伯母ケ酒」で文化庁芸術祭芸術祭大賞受賞。2003年旭日小綬章叙勲。ヴァチカン、中国、アメリカ、オーストラリア、カナダ等で公演。

「素袍落し」　主人は明日急に伊勢参りに旅立つことになる。かねて同行を約束していた伯父に申し訳が立たないので形ばかり誘うことにして、太郎冠者を使いに出す。太郎冠者は酒など振舞われぬよう申し渡されていたのに、主命に背き浴びるほど酒を飲み、その上餞別の素袍まで貰ってしまう。上機嫌の太郎冠者だが、心配して出て来た主人と帰り道で出くわす。主人が伯父の返事を問いただしているうちに素袍が落ちる・・・。
