Call for Papers: Ancient Medicine, 'Behind and Beyond Hippocrates'
Eleventh Celtic Conference in Classics
11-14 July 2018, University of St Andrews
Abstracts (300 words max) are invited for a 3-day panel on ancient medicine, 'Behind and Beyond Hippocrates', at the Celtic Conference in Classics to be held at St Andrews, 11-14 July 2018. Papers can be either 20 minutes in length (with 10 minutes for questions) or 40 minutes in length (with 20 minutes for questions). Abstracts should be sent via email to Elizabeth Craik (ec★st-andrews.ac.uk) (★=@)by 31 January 2018. After consultation with some already confirmed speakers, a programme will be circulated soon thereafter. The languages of the Celtic Conference in Classics are English and French.
The main theme of the panel is the composition and early circulation of medical works, especially - but not exclusively - those of the 'Hippocratic' Corpus. Treatment of such questions as orality and literacy, language and dialect, interaction of genres may be considered.
It is envisaged that topics covered will include:
composition and circulation of (Hippocratic) Epidemics
composition and circulation of aphoristic works
composition and circulation of anatomical and nosological works
authorship and tradition of gynaecological works
origin and tradition of Oath and deontological works
penumbra of authors listed in Anonymus Londinensis
medicine in Plato
medicine in Aristotle (esp Problemata)
